THIS JUST IN

CAMPAIGN 2010…NOW ITS PERSONAL!

The state of our State politically is a hot mess as we approach November.

If you subtract Blago from the picture you would think the Sun would shine a little brighter and the dawn of a new squeaky-clean Springfield future would be upon us.

Ahhh…not so much.

Let’s review the message being sent by the candidate messages that are airing now.

GOV. QUINN …wants you to know that Bill Brady is a tax-evading puppy killer!

BILL BRADY…wants you to know that Gov. Quinn loves to free prisoners so they can come get us!

CONGRESSMAN KIRK…wants you to know that Alexi Gianoullias is a mob banker who crushed your children’s dreams of college and a better life!

ALEXI GIANOULLIAS…wants you to know that Mark Kirk is a tool of the wealthy and a pathological liar!

MEANWHILE… which candidate has run commercials almost exclusively focused on jobs for the people of Illinois?  I’ll give you a hint.  He is the same guy who quit on his Lt. Gov. nomination (with his son crying in his lap) after it was revealed that, when not making big pawn shop money, he was allegedly roughing up the women in his life.

That’s right…the one candidate talking to the voters about the primary issue of the day is…the voice of reason…

Scott Lee Cohen.

Wonder what he could get us for the whole state…it may be time to move to higher ground.

WTF WGN?

David Carr did a GREAT job on his lengthy piece detailing the bad joke that is current Tribune Company management.  If you missed it this week in the New York Times I have it here below.

I don’t have a horse in this race anymore but I still care very much about WGN Radio and my friends at the paper and in TV.  That’s why I continue to say yes when asked to do interviews about this topic.

Meanwhile wherever I go now…everyday of the week…people ask me WHAT HAPPENED to WGN and the Trib company?  For that reason I want to reinforce a few truths here for all who care.  Consider these answers to the FAQs I keep getting.

So…

-I  have been and will continue to be outspoken about the travesty in the Trib Tower.

-The majority of people at the Trib Company are GREAT people who are doing their jobs exceptionally well in a miserable environment.

-Yes things are tough all over and NO the management at other media companies are not this bad.  Crazy as it sounds…they are actually trying to win and many actually appreciate their employees.

-I don’t work for Tribune management anymore and I will never work for any of them again.

-The only thing I am bitter about is that these chumps continue to destroy a Chicago institution and get paid millions to do so.

-Just because they own it and run it doesn’t mean its ok to kill it.

-They are not just incompetent, they are also angry, and completely disinterested in what the audience wants.

-They have no interest in any idea or opinion that is counter to their own.  The statements from the executive offices about fostering a creative, free thinking environment are ludicrous.

-The atmosphere in the halls is devoid of any fun or passion for the job and has been replaced by a fear that “…they may be next”.

-The inner circle of Tribune managers truly think they are the smartest guys in the room BECAUSE they only talk to each other.

-There is NO CHANCE for long term success for the Tribune Company as long as Randy Michaels and his yes-men are in charge.

Now read on from this past week in the NY Times.

Seriously?

SERIOUSLY?

In less than a week the Chicago Cubs have lost two (2) games…just 2 of their many losses…by a combined final score of 35-3.

And there’s still more than 50+ games left in this season.

In case you missed the good times the Colorado Rockies turned last Friday night’s eighth inning into the Mile High Massacre.

With two outs, Colorado pounded out an all-time MLB record of 11 straight hits. By the time the smoke cleared the Rockies had scored 12 runs on 13 hits and won 17-2.

You would think the baseball Gods would have been happy with their latest Cub punishment but NOOOOO!

Monday night at Wrigley the place was packed with fans happy to have their Cubbies home. The reward for coming out to watch the boys turn blue(er) was a record for the friendly confines. Milwaukee racked up 26 hits on the way to an 18-1 win.

BTW our CUBS had 4 hits and 2 errors for their 9 innings work.

Seriously?

This is the MAJOR leagues. As CUB fans we are never surprised at MAJOR disappointment. This however is new…its MAJOR HUMILIATION.

Our Chicago Cubs are now barely a Triple-A ballclub. It’s more than hard to understand. It’s inexplicable!

Who knew that Derrick Lee (.247) and Aramis Ramirez (.220) would suddenly forget how to hit?

Who knew Randy Wells would spend most of the season sucking?

Who knew that Carlos Zambrano would throw a dugout tantrum? O.K. we all knew that.

Right now the two best players on this team are Tyler Colvin and Starlin Castro.
They are both rookies. That sort of says it all.

So have they quit? Nope. This is just a very bad baseball team. The part that can’t be tolerated is this lack of professionalism.

So on behalf of all CUBS fans is it too much to ask…
-to NOT swing at the first pitch
-to NOT make stupid base running mistakes
-to hustle all game long
-to THROW STRIKES
-to care as much about your job as we do

It’s a long winter and next Spring it would be nice to think back on a good two month run to the end of 2010 and that the future Hall of Fame manager left with a smile on his face.

Is that too much to ask? Right now it feels like it might be.

Did I mention? There are still 50+ games left of this %#@&!

Seriously.

Until I rant again,
